Its getting really expensive to go out and get your preferred coffee these days and resorting to your generic brand is getting more and more the option of chioce. I believe its because of the importing getting too expensive with fuel and everything. Everyone needs their coffee just at what price? Now that you're back in the states you must have encountered an 'americano' in your local espresso stand or Star$. When I was studying in Rome, a roommate's American sister came to visit and wanted to make American-strength coffee. She used a company sized espresso pot (12 cups?), put the regular amount of water but less coffee in it. It was great! This is the concept of an americano: 2 shots of espresso (or more) and steam or hot water to get it to the usual 12 oz volume. Ciao da Seattle. I don't remember reading about the solubility of caffeine, but it sounds like the same sort of argument. Can’t sit still,

So, I retract it all. Shame on me for not verifying it myself. How embarrassing. But still...why does it seem like it's true? ?? The fact about caffeine solubility was passed on to me by a scientist I respect, but now, I can't seem to find any supporting information online! Yikes! I sent off a message to my scientist friend, so we'll see what he has to say for himself. I promise to get back on this... I do have a drip coffee machine at home though. However it doesn't seem to get used that often. I tried explaining too that a cup of American coffee contains more caffeine than one of Italian coffee, but they didn't believe me. Oh well. Let them drink a few cups and stay awake all night! Italians use a steam-extraction process, and as we all learned in grade school, steam is much hotter than any "liquid" water, thereby extracting less caffeine. So, although American coffee may look really weak...beware!!! I don't love espresso, I do love melitta style drip coffee. Do you like milk in your coffee? If so, the closest approx. I've found for american coffee is a "latte macchiato con due caffe' dentro". Sometimes this puzzles baristas, but they'll do it for ya. IF you like milk in your coffee, this comes quite close to what you are wanting. If not...well, then there's the caffe' americano....just don't add too much hot water and ask for it very long and...well..it's sorta ok...Buona Colazione! OK, I have a lot of opinions about coffee.
