Dog Poop on the Sidewalks in Italy
Saturday, December 3rd, 2005 -- J. DoeIn short. There are many people in Italy. Many of them have dogs. They take their dogs for walks on the sidewalks. Dogs poo.
The owners don’t clean up after them. They just walk away.
Italy, like many countries, has laws that says that owners should clean up after their dog, but unlike in many other countries, this is never enforced.
I have been living in Italy almost 4 years and have never seen an owner clean up their dog’s mess, or a police officer give a ticket to a dog owner who lets their dog poop right in front of him and then walk away.
There should be rules to own a dog.
Everybody who wants to have one as a pet should read and sign some basic rules. It’s not that hard, but it is a committment. If you won’t agree to do all the rules, then you are not entitled to own a dog. Period.
I hate hearing stories about people like this jerk in Florida who buried his dog because the dog was making holes ! And I hate risking getting ill because of dog waste bacteria that is lying around the sidewalks !
Follow the rules!
12 Golden Rules for Every Dog Owner
by Ray Coleiro
- Love your dog unquestioningly. Treat him like a friend. Never hurt, punish, beat or abandon him
- Ensure good nutrition
- Take an informed decision about spaying/neutering.
- Give him good veterinary care. Half yearly check ups, vaccinations, dental check ups, and more.
- Get him an ID and license.

Italy, pay attention to rule number 11.

Io ho un gatto certosino sorry
In many parts of the USA we are cursed by a growing population of untrained, unloved and inbred pitbulls. One need only read the daily newspapers to learn how horrible these dogs and their owners are… and children are often the victims.
I read a few days ago that a 76 year old woman in Texas was killed in her own yard by a group of these pitbulls.
There should be a different set of rules to follow for these owners. Those akin to owning a lethal weapon come to mind.
I know what you mean about the dog poop. And the other day I was walking along wondering why i’d never noticed the upper floors of the buildings around Milan…some of them have beautiful terraces! Oh yeah, it’s cuz i’m always watching the sidewalk in front of me for mines! Doh! Anyway, I do remember this being a problem in San Francisco too…but the thing here is the consistency…so gross…what the heck are they feeding these things!?!?!
The dog poop problem can really be a problem in places — you’re right. You can easily ruin your day if you don’t watch where you’re going.
The first time I was in Italy was when I was still a student, with a class trip. The teachers would cheerfully tell us to look out for the poop onthe sidewalk by announcing it whenever they saw any: “OK, everybody, watch out for the tartufo on the sidewalk!”
Haha funny, but honestly, it spoiled the very name of the gorgeous Italian chocolate ice cream!
I never thought of them as ‘tartufo’.
It would ruin the dessert for me too if I did.
That sucks. My girlfriend and I make sure to pick up ALL poo… and to be fair to the Spainish, most of them comply as well. Even the old ladies have been spotted picking up after their mongrels here…
I don’t have a dog, but when I dogsat for my aunt’s dog for 1 week in California I also picked up the poop (in a plastic bag of course
) . It is a disgusting thing to do, but it is worth it just to be able to have such a loveable and loyal friend.
A friend of mine visited Paris and told me that the poo is also a problem there. Then I was watching a TV documentary on tourism in France, and it showed a street cleaner in Paris who used a special kind of vacuum cleaner that’s designed to — you guessed it! — pick up the poo on sidewalks.
Anyway, messes on sidewalks is not at all good for tourism, is it? I’m sure most holidaymakers don’t want to see that kind of thing!
